This charcoal-filled canister's job is to absorb fuel vapor that would otherwise vent out to the atmosphere, causing pollution. Repairing the charcoal canister is not all that hard. The first thing you have to do is to open it up and clean out all the old contents. The canister absorbs fuel vapors, the purge valve opens and fresh air and vapors get sucked into the engine.
